I painted this piece to hold the feeling of a hot, still day on the dunes, the kind where the heat lifts off the sand and the air carries that dry, resinous smell of the coastal scrub. Looking down the slope toward the sea, I wanted that sense of being up high and alone in the warmth, with the water waiting quietly in the distance. For me it is less about the view and more about memory, the way a particular smell and the warmth of the sun can put you right back in a place you love. I hope it brings back a day like that for you.
