The Weight of Weather responds to a specific encounter with the Lake Albert and Coorong landscape during a significant storm. The work was developed from that accumulated sensory experience: the sky pressing down with physical weight, the vast flat country offering no resistance.

The Coorong's extreme horizontality is compressed into a near-square format, intensifying every tension. The sky presses harder, the land feels more fragile and besieged.

The painting is built from collaged, century-old book pages, paint, sanding and repainting, a material process mirroring the landscape itself, where layers of history and ecological meaning lie beneath what is visible. The warm ochre at the horizon is remnant paper showing through, a physical rather than painted presence of Younghusband Peninsula. A vast reflective foreground evokes shallow water and salt lakes.

Above it all, a sky carrying everything.
