A coastal dune path leads the eye through scrubby vegetation toward a sliver of teal ocean, above which an extraordinary violet-blue sky dominates nearly half the canvas. This is a painting about atmospheric light — that particular quality of overcast coastal illumination that turns the sky violet and makes everything below it glow with quiet intensity. Invented entirely from memory and decades of accumulated experience in this landscape, Under a Violet Sky is one of the most personal and most resolved works in this collection.
